The Prefix dà-

The prefix dà- (or edà-) can be added to many verbs and adverbs in order to change them into question words. Generally, when this prefix is added, it modifies the meaning of the verb or adverb to something like ‘to what extent does the verb/adverb apply?’ or ‘in what way does the verb/adverb apply?’. For example:

goı̨wà

it is far

Dàgoı̨wà?

How far is it?

whaà

long ago

Dàwhaà?

How long ago?

Otherwise, when applied to verbs, it can also change the meaning to ‘what is done with respect to the verb?’:

ts’edı

we say (it)

Dàts’edı?

What do we say?

agǫ̀ht’e

it is happening

Dàgǫ̀ht’e?

What is happening?

wı̀yeh

it is called that

Dàwı̀yeh?

What is it called?
